What Are the Differences Between Root Canal Therapy and Tooth Extraction?

When you experience severe infection or damage to a tooth, your dentist might recommend either root canal therapy or an extraction to alleviate your pain and eliminate the infection. But what is the difference between these two procedures?

The primary distinction between root canal therapy and an extraction is the removal of the tooth itself. A root canal is done to treat the problem by preserving the natural tooth, while an extraction is used to eliminate the problem by removing the natural tooth.

Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is performed when the inside layer of a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or damaged. An endodontist will remove this damaged or infected tissue and clean out the inside of the tooth. The tooth is then filled and sealed with a rubbery material called gutta-percha to prevent any further infection. If left untreated, a painful abscess might form as a result of the infection.

However, using modern anesthetics and technology, root canal therapy is considered a relatively painless dental procedure, with over 41,000 root canals performed daily.

Tooth Extraction

When an infection or damage to a tooth is too severe, your dentist will likely recommend an extraction. In this case, an oral surgeon will remove the entire tooth, leaving an empty space in its place. A general anesthetic is often used to numb the area to keep the procedure pain-free. A sedative like nitrous oxide is also commonly used to help keep you calm and relaxed during the extraction.

Your endodontist will discuss your health history, take dental imaging, and perform a dental exam to determine the severity of your tooth damage or infection and help you decide which procedure is the right choice for your specific circumstances.

What Are the Benefits of an Extraction?

While root canal therapy is the ideal choice for an infected or damaged tooth, there are some advantages to having a tooth extraction instead. For example, in cases where the damage or infection is too severe, an extraction might be the safest option to remove the infection and prevent further dental complications.

Some other benefits of an extraction over a root canal include the following:

  • Solves the immediate solution: An extraction will immediately remove any infection and prevent further damage.
  • Simpler procedure: In many cases, dental extractions are a simpler and more straightforward procedure.

We recognize that each patient is unique and believe in designing personalized treatment plans that meet your specific dental needs and goals. Please reach out if you have any questions about the benefits of extractions over root canal therapy.
