Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a general dentist and an endodontist?
Endodontists are dental specialists who focus entirely on diagnosing tooth pain and treating the inside of the tooth. They complete two to three additional years of advanced training after dental school. Because they handle complex root canal cases every day, they use specialized techniques and technology to save teeth that might otherwise need extraction.
How do I know if I need to see an endodontist?
You should see a specialist if you experience severe, throbbing tooth pain that keeps you awake. Other clear warning signs include prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling around your gums, or a cracked tooth. If your regular dentist spots a deep infection, they will often send you to us for precise care.
What happens during my first visit?
We start by finding the exact source of your pain. Our team takes advanced 3D images of your tooth and jaw. Then, we sit down with you to explain the diagnosis, walk through your treatment options, and provide a clear outline of what to expect before we do any work.
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
No. While many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, you can contact us directly. If you are experiencing sudden, severe tooth pain, you can call our Livingston or Summit offices to schedule an immediate evaluation.
Why do you use 3D imaging and microscopes?
The inside of a tooth is incredibly tiny and complex. We use EdgePRO® laser technology to clean and CBCT 3D scans to see hidden infections or cracks that traditional 2D X-rays miss. During treatment, ZEISS clinical microscopes allow us to work with pinpoint precision, ensuring no part of the infection is left behind.
Will my procedure hurt?
No. The goal of endodontic treatment is to relieve your pain, not cause it. We use highly effective local anesthesia and modern microsurgical techniques to ensure you stay completely numb and comfortable throughout your entire visit.
What if I have intense dental anxiety?
It is completely normal to feel nervous about dental procedures. We prioritize your comfort and offer tailored sedation options. Depending on your needs, we provide nitrous oxide for mild relaxation, IV sedation for deeper comfort, or even general anesthesia. We make sure you feel entirely safe.
What actually happens during a root canal?
A root canal heals an infected tooth from the inside out. The process is straightforward:
• We completely numb the area so you feel zero pain.
• We create a tiny opening to access the infected nerve.
• We carefully clean out the damaged tissue and bacteria.
• We fill and seal the space to prevent future infections.
How long does it take to recover from a root canal?
Most patients recover very quickly. You might feel some mild tenderness or sensitivity when biting down for a few days, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. You can usually return to work and your normal routine the very next day.
Do I need to see my regular dentist after my root canal?
Yes. A root canal fixes the inside of your tooth, but the outside still needs protection. After we clear the infection and secure the root, we send your records to your general dentist. They will place a permanent crown on the tooth to restore its full biting strength.
